This week Matt McGrath was Caught Being Good!
Please come to the office to pick up your prize. Who will be caught next?
From the Principal:
Last night's Back to School Night was a wonderful evening and I truly enjoyed talking with you and visiting many classrooms. I heard great things from the teachers about their goals for the year and I hope you share their expectations for academic growth and success for your student.
One topic at Back to School Night was the use of School Loop for communication with teachers, grade check-ups, and homework assignments. We also use School Loop to send out parent communication. An unfortunate aspect of their email system is the random insertion of spaces mid-word or sentence. Please know we do not intentionally send out email that appears grammatically incorrect but these spaces may make it appear so.
The Los Cerros magazine drive is in full swing and I hope you will support this fundraising effort to the best of your ability. I realize that education really isn't free anymore and that parents are asked to donate too many things such as class supplies, uniforms, technology, Boosters, PTA, and on and on. In reality schools can not survive without the support of parents through the donation of time and money. Given the current economy I respect your financial constraints and welcome the gift of your time also.
Our school has now received the updated protocols for the H1N1 virus. Any child who comes to our sick room will automatically have their temperature taken and if above 100 degrees they will need to go home. Students must be fever free, without the aid of medicine, for 24 hours before returning to school. We ask that you support our efforts for good community health and not send a sick child to school.
On Tuesday, Sept. 8 President Obama is speaking to American students about the importance of education. Teachers at Los Cerros have not been instructed to watch the speech but do have the option. In the event it is shown in class, and you do not want your child to see it, please have them bring a note to class on that Tuesday and we will of course respect your wishes.
Enjoy your three day weekend with family and we look forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday.

"Everything you need to know about 6th grade, but were afraid to ask” – coming October 1, at 7pm in the library. Learn what it’s REALLY like to be a middle schooler (and make your life easier too!). rsvp to nschubb@srvusd.net
Ms. Schubb has visited all 6th grade core classes and will be finishing 7th & 8th grade next week. Encourage your student to stop by and say hi to me anytime. And remember the parent information board located in the counseling waiting area.
Academic
All 6th graders (except Band) have completed their 3 days of Student Effectiveness Training in the wheel. Your student now “officially” knows how to write in their planner. In the next 2 weeks leadership students will be starting “backpack 101”. Each leadership student will be assigned 5-6, 6th gr students and will check their backpack/planner once a month for completeness and organization.
You can support this by checking your student’s planner (against school loop) nightly and setting aside one night a week to “dump” the backpack.
All after school academic supports will begin mid October, including peer tutoring, math help and homework club.
Personal/Social
Lunch group – Would your student like some place fun to go at lunch and maybe make new friends? Our “lunch bunch” will start Thursday 9/10/09. Please email Ms. Schubb if you would like your student to receive a special invitation. nschubb@srvusd.net
Our Discovery Center intern will be here on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting 9/9/09. If you think your student could use the extra support of a weekly “check in”, please email Ms. Schubb nschubb@srvusd.net
Creating Lasting Family Connections- The Discovery Center is offering an after school group to support students in their transition to middle school. The group starts 9/16/09 here at Los Cerros from 2:30-4pm. Students will learn tools for stress management, communication skills and navigating middle school. For more information, please contact Michelle Cummings at 925.837.0505 x. 305 or michelle@discoveryctr.net
Career
Parents - if you would like to volunteer to help with career day or have a career you would like to share with the students, please let us know. Career Day is April 23rd from 8-10am. nschubb@srvusd.net

LIBRARY THANKS
Thanks from the library for all the generous donations made to support our program. Your donations go to help pay for our databases, on-line access catalog, materials for class programs in the library, books (of course), and book clubs.
In addition: We are hoping that you might have some time to volunteer in the library.
Book Fair is fast approaching the week of October 12th – 16th. We need parent volunteers to help run the book fair, including a refill manager. This person will be our liaison with Scholastic to keep things well stocked. Our goal this year is to earn enough points to purchase a Smart board for the library and add 50 to 100 new titles to our shelves. If you can help, please contact Michelle Miller at fivemillers@comcast.net.
Also needed are Lunch Volunteers to help keep things running during all lunches. We need one parent each day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:30 till 12:45 and Wednesdays 11:20 till 1:20. Volunteer jobs will include: checking out material, shelving books, processing new items, helping create new displays, and general office work. Good candidates should have previous library volunteer experience, but training will be provided. Please contact either Mrs. Davis at ddavis@srvusd.net or Mary Nash at mary.nash@comcast.net. |
The PTA Special Needs Committee presents
Welcome to Special Education
Wednesday, September 30, 2009 from 7-9 PM in the Iron Horse Middle School MPR.
Have you ever wondered what the roles of the different special education groups are in the SRVUSD? What steps you can take if you’re concerned about your child’s educational progress? How a student becomes eligible for special education?
The answers to these questions and more will be answered at this event, so you won’t want to miss it! After an overview by special education groups that offer education and support for special needs students in our community, we will break into smaller groups by school age so you can get all your questions answered.
To view the flyer for this event, click here. To register, click here. Registration ensures enough handouts. For more information, please contact Kristin Chen (kecnorway@comcast.net). |
