Los Cerros News

This week John Mackey was Caught Being Good!
Please come to the office to pick up your prize.  Will you be caught next?

From the Principal:

As you know from my two School Loop alerts it's been an interesting week at Los Cerros. I want to thank the many supportive messages we received regarding the trail incident on Friday and in particular thank the parents who have now started walking the trail after school. This support is invaluable in keeping our students safe. In addition to our parents, the Danville Police Department continues to patrol frequently at the beginning and end of each school day and we are thankful for their presence.  Please be aware that if you have reason to contact the Danville Police Department and call 911 you will be directed to the California Highway Patrol instead. To reach Danville Police it is best to use their dispatch number, 820-2144.  Mr. Cannon, Ms. Schubb and I do our best to be out each day but there are occasions where it isn't possible.

On a more cheerful topic, our annual magazine drive concluded on September 16th. I want to thank everyone who put the effort into selling magazines or took subscriptions themselves. We use this money to support all activities outside of the regular classroom such as Intramural Sports, dances, academic clubs such as Panther Pride and Paw Prints, Peer Tutoring, Homework Club, and Math tutoring. While we raised less than last year we will use our donations wisely and stretch it as far as we're able. It is clear that this is a difficult economic time for many, many people and we are empathetic to the realities of our community. The school will celebrate the drive's conclusion with our traditional Pig Race in the school gym. Winning homerooms race their mechanical pigs to determine a school champion in this very popular event.

The school busses continue to provide traffic congestion relief and our participation rate is at an impressive 48%. TRAFFIX has been more successful than we imagined and the yellow school busses are now a regular fixture at Los Cerros.

We are preparing for our week of conferences October 5 and I look forward to seeing many of you on campus.

Thank you,
Phyllis Roach

PTA NEWS
Thank you parents and staff for attending our first PTA meeting on Thursday! It was an informative hour with our principal, teachers, and counselor. Great information was shared about what is taking place at Los Cerros. Below are some important dates to remember, so be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming events.

Please join us again on October 22nd at 9:00AM for our next meeting. Kerry Sloss from the Danville Police Department will be our guest speaker on internet safety and to address any parent concerns.  Stay tuned to our kickoff of the speaker series with George Papageorge.  Time spent with him is always entertaining and informative and timely.  Some other important dates that you will not want to miss are:  Primo's Run on October 11th and Book Fair October 12-16th.

We are so excited about this school year!! PTA is a great place to get involved or just find out what is going on at our school.  Looking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting!!

BOOK FAIR AT LOS CERROS
Book Fair is the week of October 12th – 16th.  Our goal this year is to earn enough points to purchase a Smart Board for the library and add 50 to 100 new titles to our shelves.  If you can help, please contact Michelle Miller at fivemillers@comcast.net.

Teachers, students and parents have many resources available to them from the library web page at http://library.lcms.srvusd.k12.ca.us.  Some of these links are for resources used for class projects, while others are resources can be used every day.  Plus,  we have a few electronic subscriptions  for our students.  One subscription is for Ed1stop.com.  This subscription is portal, which contains streaming video, Maps 101, and EBSCO – our periodical database.  Take a tour with your student to discover what is available.  User name is lcms_stu and the password is panthers.

PAW PRINTS
Paw Prints, our Los Cerros magazine, is getting organized and going to an online format!  On Wednesday, September 30th we will have our first planning meeting. If you would like to serve on the Paw Prints editorial Board this year, please come to Room 12 after school on Wednesday. We¹ll meet from 2:40 until 3:15. The editorial Board will make decisions about writing contests and create and publicize writing opportunities for students this year.  Don¹t forget, after school on Wednesday in room 12. See you then!

CJSF update:
Ninety three (93) 8th grade students have submitted applications for membership for fall 2009.  The list of new members will be posted by the end of the week, and membership cards will be distributed during lunch next week.

Remember to mark September 30 on your calendars for those who wish to participate in our U Summit hosted by Special Olympics.  The time will be from 2:30- 3:30 after school.

If you have not signed up to participate in the Primo's Run for Education, please do so now. This is another way to earn community service hours.

Again, congratulations to our prospective new members, and both 7th and 8th graders may apply after first semester ends in January.  We are proud to have so many students who serve the community, the school and who strive to achieve high academic marks.

Parenting tip
Are you a "snowplow parent"?  It seems that often times I work with students who seem to have a lot of anxiety around being successful - in school, sports, friendships. Although it seems natural as a parent to try and "clear the way" (like a snowplow) of any challenges and obstacles your child may face - remember that this is how he/she will being to feel confident in their abilities. It is true that they may not struggle, but it is also true that they won't think they CAN do it either, if the parent is always stepping in.
