Los Cerros News

This week Jason Stone was Caught Being Good.
Please come by the office to pick up your prize.  Will you be caught next?

From the Principal:

It's a well known fact that schools depend on consistent student attendance for their funding. A high level of attendance is actually one of the few budget influences we can control, unlike state funding which is subject to larger constraints. As the holiday seasons approach I am asking that you not pull your student out of school for extra vacation days. Our calendar year provides students with 28 days of vacation within 180 days of school. It is so easy to plan vacations around the allotted time so I thank you for your increased support in this area. It means a lot of money for Los Cerros.

With the flu season here we do support our district nurses and the Center for Disease Control recommendation that students with a fever over 100 degrees remain at home until fever free, without medication, for 24 hours. There have been a lot of students home sick this week and we wish them a speedy recovery. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

Finally I want to thank the few parents who have made the effort to patrol the trail after school. I've enjoyed talking to you and I know our students appreciate your presence.

Please enjoy your three day weekend and we will see you on Monday rested and ready to go.

Technology News
Did you know your student can use Schoolloop to bring documents back and forth to school?  Did you know that you can download word processing software for free?!

Students have a locker at the top of the page when they are logged into www.lcms.schoolloop.com.  Students sometimes lose documents, can’t print at home, or need to make a few last minute adjustments to work done at home.  Encourage your student to put their file in their locker when they are done.  By doing this, your child will have access to the document or file at home and at school.  Need more help?  Mrs. Davis has created a Screencast demonstrating the process, which is linked on the library web site.  Go to http://library.lcms.srvusd.k12.ca.us, then look for How to _____ in _____, then click on add a file to schoolloop.

However, remember that if you have Microsoft office 2007 installed on your computers at home, it is not compatible with our software here.  Help your child save the document in a format compatible with Office 2004.  Simply, click save as then instead of just saving as a word document etc. click on the menu to save as a previous version.  Not sure, please ask your student to see Mrs. Davis in the library for a quick lesson.

Even better, go to Openoffice.org to download free software.  This software can be used to create documents, spreadsheets, or presentations and it is free to download!  It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that another purchased product would, but it will be adequate for most of the work your student will be completing at home.  Also, this is the software loaded on all the computers in Bessie our new COW (computers on wheels).  This means that teachers and students will be learning how to use this software at school.  Questions about this article?  Please contact Donnine Davis at ddavis@srvusd.net.

2010 PTA Reflections Theme:  Beauty Is...
For 40 years the national PTA Reflections Program has encouraged students across the nation to create works of art in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and the visual arts. During the month of October we are asking students at Los Cerros to unleash their artistic talents and submit works of art in any of those areas with the theme: Beauty Is...
Our kids' artwork will be judged for creative merit and can advance from our school on to the district, then to state and possibly even the national level. Does your child have passion for the arts? Do you see a spark of creativity waiting to be ignited? Encourage your child to channel their creative energy and create a piece of artwork for submission to the Reflections Program. Deadline is Oct. 30th. If you think your child might be interested in participating sit down with them at your computer tonight and visit the CA Reflections website: www.capta.org/sections/programs/reflections.cfm to be inspired  by some of the winning artwork from 2009.
For information on completing entries contact Jane VanderWerf at jane.vanderwerf@sbcglobal.net

The last cross-country meet is October 14th:  meet Mr. Abers at 3:00 on the blacktop near the corner of the gym by the basketball courts.  We will walk over to the meet together, then have some time to stretch and warm up.  The meet starts in Oak Hill Park near the volleyball court at about 3:45 and takes about one-half hour.  Parents need to pick up their son or daughter at the park please arrive between 4 - 4:15.

VERY IMPORTANT: STUDENTS WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE GYM AFTER THE MEET. THE GYM WILL BE LOCKED.  Students need to bring their backpacks and all other belongings with them to the meet.  If they change clothes, they need to put them in a separate bag or in their backpack.

All eight middle schools in the district compete in these events.
Congratulations to the top finishers from:
