Los Cerros News

This week David Van Sicklen was Caught Being Good.
Please stop by the office to pick up your prize.  Who will be caught next?

From the Principal:
On Friday I will attend the California Distinguished School Recognition Day in Anaheim. Along with ten SRVUSD Principals we will meet with State Superintendent Jack O'Connell to celebrate selection as a school of excellence. Without the support of our school community, the dedication of the teachers, and the hard work of the students Los Cerros would not have received this designation. I thank all members of the community for their part in our selection.

There are many activities between now and the end of the school year. Eighth grade parents in particular please check the dates for Promotion and other events. Please note that eighth grade students who receive any F's, three detentions, or have been suspended will not be allowed to participate in the Promotion Party or Great America trip.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Phyllis Roach

LEADERSHIP NEWS- FIELD DAY!
Field Day is Friday June 5.  It will begin at noon and will go until the end of the day.  The district is providing a bbq lunch for any students interested.  It will cost $3.50 and we will pre-sell lunch bracelets next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  If you buy a bracelet, DO NOT lose it because it is your only way to prove that you bought a ticket for lunch.  There will be carnival-style events including a dunk tank where you can dunk your favorite teacher!  Please remember that this is a regular school day and attendance will be taken at 2:30pm in your 7th period class making sure that you were at school for the full day.  We are hoping that this will be a fun day for everyone so please remind yourselves to be on your best behavior so that this event can continue in the future.
Thank  You...The Leadership Class

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2009
Ten book titles and nine teams... the main ingredients of this year's SRVUSD "Battle of the Books" contest held at Cal High last Tuesday, May 19th.  The Los Cerros team members were Tracey Costes, Nick Eidler, Aaron Preiss, Katherine Sharrock and Ashley Taylor. The Los Cerros team met bi-monthly to read and discuss the books.  The other schools competing this year were Iron Horse, Pine Valley, Diablo Vista, and Gale Ranch Middle Schools.  Los Cerros began confidently with only one incorrect answer when the first two teams were eliminated.

The two finalist teams were from Pine Valley and Diablo Vista.  After a tense round Diablo Vista prevailed, taking over the title from last year's winners, Iron Horse.

Kudos to the Los Cerros team for their hard work to become experts on the books and for doing such a great job during the competition! Many thanks also to Mrs. Davis for working with our team of readers, Mrs. Nash for helping with library supervision, Mrs. Sharrock for driving our team, and to Ms. Shannon Paladini, Teacher Librarian at Cal High, for MC-ing the event and working so hard to make sure this year’s event happened.

Library News
All books and other library materials are due back by June 4th.  Also, as we wind down the school year, our student file server and schoolloop will be reformatted over the summer. Therefore, students wishing to keep an electronic portfolio will need to move their files to a home computer or portable device.

There are several methods they can use to do this: Put them in their schoolloop locker - these will need to but taken out of the locker before summer as well, or put them on a USB drive, or bring a disc to school to save their files on.

Be aware that personal e-mail does not always work for students to use here at school, so we do not recommend that students use personal e-mail to move files. Mrs. Davis will have a limited supply of discs available to students for 50 cents each. Mrs. Lawton in the lab or Mrs. Davis can help students move their files.
