Los Cerros News

This week Chanelle Obata was Caught Being Good!
Please stop by the office to pick up your prize.  Who will be next?

 From the Principal:

Last Friday Los Cerros was visited by the California Distinguished Schools validation team. We were granted Distinguished School consideration based on our December application to the state. Stage two of this honor is the teams visit to assure that we are a stellar school. The team interviewed parents, students, and staff and observed many classrooms to gain an accurate picture of how Los Cerros succeeds in educating your student. They were very impressed with our school and as a result Los Cerros has been recommended for 2009 Distinguished School distinction. Thank you to the many participants who made the day a success.

I know that many of you are concerned about the impact of the state education budget cuts that were approved on February 19th. On Tuesday evening many of us attended the Special Board Meeting at San Ramon Valley High School to hear the district present its budget containing $8 million in proposed cuts. That budget is posted on the district webpage at www.srvusd.net, click on the Budget link in the upper left corner and scroll to the bottom of the page for the latest budget edition.

We are fortunate that through careful budget analysis the SRVUSD deficit was reduced from an anticipated $21 million. The remaining cuts in staffing, class size increases, and service reductions will mean that all district schools will be operating on very lean budgets. Considering how few discretionary dollars Los Cerros receives, the service reductions will also impact our library, technology, and counseling staffing. District counselors were given a one year reprieve but will be on the block again in 2010-2011 while the AB1802 counselors were cut for next year. Several staff members at Los Cerros have already received Release Notices and on March 13th final notices will be distributed. We are supporting each other as a community but these times are extremely stressful on all staff members.

In order for the district, and subsequently Los Cerros, to avoid further operating impact we'll need to survive upcoming budget challenges. First, the state of California annually completes a budget revision each May. It is expected that SRVUSD may find its deficit increased after the revision resulting in deeper program cuts.  Secondly, on May 5th there will be a mail-in Parcel Tax vote that would provide $7 million annually to the district to go directly to student services. If this tax is not approved there will have to be a 100% implementation of all proposed cuts and reductions.

Finally, crucial to Los Cerros specifically, is our annual Education Fund drive which supports the addition of twelve class sections. Given current economic realities there is real concern Boosters may not be able to meet this annual goal. With the increase in middle school class sizes for next year these sections are needed more than ever to avoid packed classrooms.  During planning for this fund drive Boosters considered many ways to increase our 54% family participation rate and also debated whether to maintain our current donation amount versus an increased amount. The Boosters decided to maintain last year's donation level with the hopes of increasing our participating family's percentage. When you receive the Education Fund letter please consider donating to the best of your ability.

I thank you for the many things you do for Los Cerros and appreciate the time and energy you give to us. Your support is crucial to our service to our students.

8th Grade Promotion Party - Saturday, June 6th, 2009
Hopefully, by now, you have the right date on your calendars - Saturday, June 6th - and the right time - 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. - and we can begin to tell you a little more about the Party.  Well, not too much; the theme is kept a close secret from the students so you won't be hearing about that in the Panther Press!

However, we don't mind word getting out that we will have the traditional Photo Booth and Photo Wall, and that we need your help with both:
  • We need props for the Photo Booth  - a selection of hats, scarves, feather boas, glasses, capes, jackets and party items; the crazier the colors, the better!  These items can be returned to you after the party, but please do be sure to put your name on them if you want them back.
  • Don't miss out on the Photo Wall - your child will want to see themselves up there on the night, honest!  So, start thinking about the ONE best photo you can send in of your student - a current shot (not a baby picture!) that reflects something about who they are as they prepare to move on to the next stage of school life!  You might choose a photo of your child doing their favourite activity or sport, or on a favourite trip, at a favourite place... something showing them at their best!  Please put your child's name on the back of the photo so it can be returned.

Please leave photos and Photo Booth props in the office.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Shelby Fautt at 640-4805 of sfautt@fautthomes.com.  Thank you so much.

Don't forget, it doesn't matter which grade your student is in, if you'd like to get involved, we'd love to have you!  Just contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Benita Smiley, at
bhsmiley@comcast.net and let her know what you'd like to do.

Many thanks to you all!

BandWorks Rock n’ Roll Summer Camp in San Ramon!
For kids ages 8-16, BandWorks Summer Camp is open to young beginners through advanced, older teen players. Professional musician-instructors create a fun and supportive environment while they teach kids the skills they need to play in a rock band-and make new friends in the process.

Our week-long Summer Day Camps offer a variety of classes throughout the summer, and by the end of the week, students are rocking out in a live performance at San Ramon Community Center. For beginners, we have Intro to Rock camp, and for kids with musical experience, camps include Rock Jam and our popular “Music of” series, in which students focus on one featured band for the week, learning their songs and the tricks that make them great. Camps are available in Morning and Afternoon sessions, with free lunch supervision for kids who sign up for both sessions.

For more info about BandWorks Summer Camp, please contact us today at info@bandworks.com, 510-843-BAND(2263), or visit our website:

STREET SMARTS "BE REEL!" VIDEO CONTEST
Make your own video about walking safely to school.  You have the chance to be on tv and win great prizes.  First prize for each member of the video production team is an ipod nano with digital docking station.  Second prize is an ipod shuffle and each student that enters a video gets a $5 giftcard.  The theme this year is "using crosswalks and walking safely to school".  The video is due by 3/31/09.  Forms and entry info is available on:  www.streetsmarts-srv.com or by calling 314-3382.

TRAFFIC SAFETY ALERT
During the hours when students are walking and riding bikes to and from school please be patient and alert at the crosswalks.  Cars driving south on Green Valley and turning right at Blemer must give pedestrians the right of way.  Students have reported their concerns to the school as they are worried about their safety. The Danville Police Department is monitoring the traffic patterns.  Our students safety is our primary concern, please drive appropriately.

We are continuing the 7th & 8th grade students' "blue folder" meetings through the next 2 weeks. These meetings are intended to involve your student in their academic success by reviewing academic records (i.e. STAR tests, transcripts etc) and helping them move towards high school and beyond. Students are welcome to come in at lunch to see Ms. Schubb or Ms. White and go over their folder.

To date, our "blue folder" meetings have identified the following data –

  • 57% of 7th graders were polled. Post presentation data shows
  • 90% know that the CAHSEE is required to graduate H.S.  (up from 40% pretest)
  • 67% know their English STAR score (up from 20% pretest)
  • 95% know the number of units needed to graduate H.S. (up from 72% pretest)

Current 6th –  I will explain all elective options on 3/13 during the wheel or band. Course selection sheets with parent signature will be due back to the wheel teacher on 3/20.

Current 7th – I will remind all 7th graders about the elective selection process on 3/18 & 3/19 during science. Course selection sheets with parent signature will be due back to the science teacher on 3/27.

Students will be asked for 6 choices in order of priority, and 8th graders will be given priority. Personal/social

6th parents of girls
Is your daughter struggling with her group of friends?  Does it seem like the drama is getting in the way of her paying attention in class?  We will be starting a “circle of friends” group during lunch to work on friendship skills. Please let me know if you would like your student to participate.

15TH Annual Youth to Youth Middle School Conference 100% NATURAL.....100% YOU....ADD NOTHING!!!  March 14, 2009 at Gale Ranch Middle School. This is an amazing, really fun day and an opportunity for young teens to spend with high school leaders who believe in the strength of being drug, alcohol and tobacco free.  But this conference is about so much more than drug and alcohol prevention.  It’s about leadership, self-confidence and empowering young people to make positive choices that impact their future. Sponsored by the San Ramon Valley Community Against Substance Abuse  Registration forms can be found in the school office or downloaded at
www.srvcasa.org

Career
“Cool Nights” (College Opportunity; Opportunities for Life”) is coming soon.  The evening will give middle school students and their parents information about transition to high school and opportunities for college and careers.  Wednesday, March 4th 6:30-8:30pm, Alhambra High School, Martinez. For more information email Liz Rusk
erusk@cccoe.k12.ca.us.

Parent tip
Having trouble with your child's texting habits (and the bill!)?  What about having them "check" the phone with you before bedtime.  The phone can charge safely out of the way of interrupting your child's sleep, and removing any opportunity for your child to text/talk when they're not supposed to be.

Library News

The library is creating on-line book discussion wiki for the Prophecy Keepers by Melaine Bryant.  This wiki discussion will be open to any Los Cerros student, staff, or parent.  If you are interested in joining the wiki, just e-mail Mrs. Davis in Schoolloop or at ddavis@srvusd.net

Cost is always an issue when providing new up to date resources for students, however, now available to students 24/7 are Maps 101 and Brainpop in Ed1stop.com!  Besides these new resources, Ed1stop.com has many other resources for students:  tutorials for software or a works cited sheet, streaming videos, a periodical database, copyright free music for PowerPoint presentations, or even copyright free pictures from API!   The Contra Costa County Office of Education has done a great job negotiating favorable contracts for all these services.

  • In Brainpop Mobi is looking for answers to standards based questions covering a large variety of subject areas.  These brief Flash videos are fun quick way for students to learn.
  • In Maps101 you can use interactive maps or archival maps to research for History, writing a story, or even science.

Both are easy to use, just log-in from the library web site or go to www.ed1stop.com.  Our User Name is lcms_stu and our  password is panthers.

COMMUNITY FAIR

Sometimes it is hard to know what programs and services are available in your own community. The purpose of the Community Fair is to provide families with a one-stop-shop where they can meet face-to-face with various groups that provide summer and fall programs and activities. The idea of this fair came from community members who wanted “options” for their kids, instead of the kids sitting at home all summer…watching TV or playing on the computer. This event is open to everyone and, if you know anyone who runs a summer program for youth/families, please have them contact me.  We still have room for 10 more booths!  In the past, we have had several teachers and administrators who run sports, music and/or academic camps over the summer, participate in the event.

This year, we have been working with the district's Special Needs Committee to increase the number of vendors that offer programs for youth with special needs.  We are also working with groups that offer post high school programs.

7th Annual SRV Community Fair
4/1/2009, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
