Los Cerros News

This week Robbie Livingston was Caught Being Good.
Come to the office Robbie to collect your prize!  Who will be caught next?

From the Principal:

This week began a series of public forums with Superintendent Steve Enoch regarding the state education budget. The state's financial crisis has and will impact our district and it is important that the community provide needed input in how to best allocate our limited funding. On Tuesday, January 20 you are invited to a forum at the Monte Vista High School library beginning at 6:30pm. I will be there along with many district personnel to hear the superintendent's presentation. There will be time for you to contribute your thoughts and I'd like to encourage all of you to attend.

As most of you know last week I announced my decision to end the 6th grade Yosemite trip after this year. I want to thank you for your responses and support as it was a hard decision but one I feel to be best for all concerned.

I feel compelled to make another appeal to you regarding cell phones. Many students received phones as a holiday gift resulting in a large increase in cell phone usage during class. Text messaging is rampant and has resulted in student detentions, phone confiscations, and zeros on tests. If you require your student to bring a cell phone to school please have a conversation with them about the appropriate use of the phone. Perhaps consider disabling their texting abilities. In my experience the texts that are sent between students are rarely of an important nature and when this texting occurs during class it's completely inappropriate and distracting to the learning environment.

I want to thank you as parents for the vital role you play as educator in your child's life. We couldn't do our work at Los Cerros without your support at home. Whether it's your homework assistance, family dinner conversations about school, or educational vacation trips, home life is full of teachable moments that enhance your child's growth. Next week there are two important events that will be focused on at school. The juxtaposition of Martin Luther King's birthday and the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first African-American President is a moment of history that will be memorable for all. As you enjoy the three day weekend perhaps take a minute to remember the day as more than a day off and instead as the birthday of a prominent American who made Obama's election possible.
