Congrats to Nick Eidler who won the annual Los Cerros Spelling Bee.
Good luck at the County Spelling Bee.  Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

From the Principal:

On Wednesday I was fortunate enough to travel to Sacramento with PTA members for their annual Advocacy Day. The timing of the conference couldn’t have been more interesting. The legislators were in budget lock down and so our guest speakers were literally receiving minute by minute updates about an impending resolution. The development of this budget and its long term impact on education was explained in great detail. While there was little uplifting news it was still good to receive such a solid analysis of the situation. At 4am this morning the senate signed the bill much to everyone's great relief. What this means for SRVUSD is budget planning may now proceed with real numbers versus the theoretical. The budget is greatly reduced and will have real consequences for SRVUSD and Los Cerros.

There will be many times in the coming weeks where you will be asked to contribute in some way to the financial health of Los Cerros. At that time I hope you'll give to the best of your ability and if not in dollars then in time and energy. Our community has proven its commitment to high level education through Boosters, PTA, parcel tax, and your donations.  Thank you for all of your past, present, and future support of Los Cerros. In turn we are committed to the best education possible for your child.

Phyllis Roach
Principal

PTA MEETING
Come to the February 26th PTA meeting at 9:00 am in the teacher's lounge.  We will speak about the state budget and what changes will take place at Los Cerros to deal with the shortfall. If you have other topics you would like to discuss, please email me at jenniferwalsh@comcast.net.  The upcoming parcel tax will also be on the agenda.  It’s important that parents hear and understand what the ballot Measure is and how it is different from previous ballot measures. The PTA meetings provide a good opportunity to be informed and enjoy other parents in a casual setting.

8th Grade Promotion Party - June 6th, 2009
Sounds a long way off, doesn't it?  But it will be here sooner than we think AND there's plenty to do before the event to make sure it's the best it can be for our students.  So, first things first!

  • Please make a note of the date on your 2009 calendar - Friday, June 6th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Los Cerros.  Of course, it's a long time since registration when you may - or may not! - have signed up and paid for your 8th grader to attend the party!
  • If you aren't sure what you did back in August (who is?!), contact the Party Chair, Lynelle Boorey, at dorisboo@aol.com, and she will check the list!
  • Next, please consider getting involved now or closer to the time, when many
hands will certainly help to make light work!   E-mail our Volunteer
    Coordinator, Benita Smiley, at bhsmiley@comcast.net
  • Volunteers are needed to help with invitations, games, decorations, food, the photo booth, set-up and clean-up and, of course, just being there on the night itself.  And, if you have a special talent or a supply of things that we might be able to use, then we definitely want to hear from you!
  • It is customary to extend an invitation to all 6th and 7th grade parents to help too, especially at the party, though few take the opportunity!  We truly would love to have you there and would encourage you to get involved.  It's your chance to see what the party is all about ready for when your students are in 8th grade (and believe me that seems to come around sooner than you think!).  Please get in touch with Benita or Lynelle for more information or to let us know when you can help!

    Many thanks to you all!

BandWorks Rock n’ Roll Summer Camp in San Ramon!
For kids ages 8-16, BandWorks Summer Camp is open to young beginners through advanced, older teen players. Professional musician-instructors create a fun and supportive environment while they teach kids the skills they need to play in a rock band-and make new friends in the process.  The week-long Summer Day Camps offer a variety of classes throughout the summer, and by the end of the week, students are rocking out in a live performance at San Ramon Community Center. Camps are available in Morning and Afternoon sessions, with free lunch supervision for kids who sign up for both sessions. For more info about BandWorks Summer Camp, please contact them at 510-843-BAND(2263), or visit website:http:
