Los Cerros News
This week Francisco Cuzner Lopez was Caught Being Good!
Please come to the office to collect your prize. Will you be caught next?!
From the Principal:
A few of you have recently contacted me regarding the presence of police cars on campus last week. Los Cerros has a great working relationship with the Danville Police Department and so occasionally you will see a police car on site because they are speaking with a class or just dropping in to check on us. Last week the police were here to help with a disciplinary issue which was resolved quickly and did not affect the student body at large. In a separate issue we needed an ambulance on campus to help one of our students. The timing of these two occurrences have created some rumors that I won't address but please know if anything occurred at Los Cerros that affected the safety of all students you would receive quick communication. We work very hard to maintain a positive, safe campus for all.
I mentioned in a recent Panther Press that dress code issues had increased after Spring Break with a few students. Some parents have called to say thank you for enforcing the rules while others have expressed frustration. I appreciate all of that but all we ask for are at least 11 in. shorts and no spaghetti straps. I have stated I'd like full shoulder straps but I do understand the handbook states two finger straps and will accept that for now.
We'll be STAR testing beginning May 5 - 7th. On those days it's particularly important that students arrive on time, get a good nights rest, and eat a good breakfast. On any given day these are all difficult to achieve so I appreciate the extra effort as these tests are very important to Los Cerros and are a chance for your student to shine.
Thank you for all of your support and please know that my door is open if you want to talk.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Phyllis Roach
LEADERSHIP NOTES
The last dance of the year is next Friday. Plan on attending the Cinco de Mayo dance on Friday May 1st. 6th grade is from 3:30-5 and 7th and 8th is from 7-9. If you come to the dance you get a free run day the following week! Tickets will be on sale next Thursday for $5. We will hand out permission slips on Tuesday.
We are going to have a homeroom competition. We are trying to raise money for a field day at the end of the school year and we need your help. One way we are going to fund raise is to collect box tops from General Mills Cereal boxes. The box tops say “box tops for education” on them and are worth 10 cents each to us. We will give you five homeroom points for each box top you bring in. This is an easy way to raise money and will help make our field day great! Thanks for your participation. The drive will end the last week in May.
Tomorrow is a fun Friday. It will be a Jello slurping contest and we’ll need one volunteer from your homeroom.
Anyone interested in the Los Cerros Golf Team should attend an information meeting on April 27, right after school, in Mrs. Hintz room 7.
If you applied for Leadership, come to the gym Friday after school to pick up your envelope stating whether or not you got in. Thank you all for applying, we had over 80 applicants for just 30 spots.
SPRING PHOTOS
The Lifetouch photo packets have been distributed to all students during lunch. All were asked to bring home to parents. These packets are paid for differently than the Fall photos. You may purchase individual sheets or the complete packet- just return the unwanted photos with a check. There is a box in the front office to return photos or purchase by May 1st.
YOSEMITE NEWS Attention all students going to Yosemite- May 10th will be here before we know it. Be sure you are getting lots of exercise and preparing to hike five miles every day. If you have new shoes, break them in at home, wearing them enough to prevent blisters. If you can't find your packing list, you can find it on the web at this link. http://yni.org/yi/miscfiles/FSEquip11.1.07.pdf There is lots of other information on the YNI.org website. Take a look. Happy hiking!! Mrs. Shetterly and Mrs. Charley

Sports at Los Cerros
Los Cerros co-ed golf season
There will be an information meeting for students on April 28th, right after school in Rm 7, (Mrs. Hintz). We encourage anyone interested in being on the team to attend the meeting for dates of try out, matches, and other information. This is a competitive team and previous golf experience is necessary. This after school sport is different from other after school sports because we are limited as to how many students we can have, and we use public courses whose requirements must be followed. The golf team will be selected based on try out performance, golf experience, and grade level, (we try to give preference to 8th graders as this will be their last opportunity to play on the LC team). Students chosen for the team will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the course and for their green fees. We look forward to another great golf season! Coach Anderson and Coach Hintz
Track - Track information will be given out at all lunches. Track is co-ed and for all grade levels. Practices will be April 30th and May 7th on the blacktop with Mr. Abers. All meets will be at Cal High School. Please contact Mike Cannon at mcannon@srvusd.net or 552-3464 if you have any questions.
As an additional reminder, please DO NOT text or call your child during the school day. It is too tempting for them to respond. If you need to get a message to your child, please call the office and we will gladly hand deliver a message.
Turn off TV/Computer Week
4/20-2/24 Study after study continues to show that parents are the number one factor in a child’s life. This makes role modeling vitally important and puts greater pressure on parents to “do” as they say, not merely act as they might like.

Now there is one website where you can plan, pay and apply for college in California! Ms. Schubb will be offering a special lunchtime session for all 8th grade students who would like to start planning now. Watch for more details coming soon.
Library News
I want to thank parent volunteers for their help in the library this year. Many parents helped with book fair, plus there are several parents who have given their time to come every week to help with various projects and morning/lunch supervision in the library.
One ongoing project that parent helpers have been working on is identifying books that might need to be discarded due to damage (beyond repair), outdated information, bias, or other reasons. As a result subject areas are being identified that need updating. “Weeding” (identifying and discarding books) is a very difficult task, especially because the library currently does not have the funds to fill these needs. However the weeding process is something that always needs to be done in libraries. The plus of weeding is, by removing some of the older and damaged books, circulation has increased of formerly hidden books.
Given the current financial crisis, you may ask, “How will we replace these books?” Funding for school library material currently comes from $1 per student from the district, about $1.19 per student from state sources, grants (always difficult for our schools in this district), book fair, and parent donations (the main source of funds.) Therefore, as funds become available through donations or other sources books will be purchased. In the meantime, if your family is looking for a way to honor some one by donating a book to the library, a couple of links to wish lists have been added to the library web site. http://library.lcms.srvusd.k12.ca.us If you want to help, ask questions, or comment please contact Ms. Davis at ddavis@srvusd.net. Here at Los Cerros Middle School we are very grateful for all the help we get from our parents! What would we do without you!
