Los Cerros News

This week Sofia Nadji was Caught Being Good!
Please come to the office to collect your prize.  Will you be caught next??

From the Principal:

I hope all of you had a pleasant Spring Break. Since we have only eight more weeks of school we know this will be a challenging time for students to keep up with work, sports, and family. We'll do what we can to help them stay focused and enjoy the remainder of the school year while also looking forward to the summer.

As the weather gets warmer the issues with Appearance Code seem to increase. We've had quite a few students arrive at school in short shorts and spaghetti strap shirts. Please remember that shorts need to be at a minimum 11 inches and all shirts full shouldered.

Our PTA recently heard from Aram Boyd, director of the Traffix program. You may have recently seen school busses pulling in and out of the Los Cerros parking lot. Next year, along with Green Valley Elementary, we will be part of Danville's Measure J bus program for students. In the next month we'll publish information about how to purchase bus passes, routes, and times. I hope you all consider participating in this important traffic congestion alleviation program.

For 8th grade parents the PTA is hosting Becky Smith, Principal of Monte Vista, on Thursday, April 23 at 9am to talk about the transition to high school. I hope to see many of you there.

On the other side of middle school I have been visiting our elementary schools to meet with PTA members and in May with 5th grade students. Even though we are always sad to lose our wonderful 8th graders we are excited about our incoming new students and are already preparing for their entry.

Have a great spring weekend!

Phyllis Roach
Principal

LEADERSHIP NOTES

Dear Los Cerros Parents,
We, the leadership students, are putting on a field day at the school on June 5. We are looking for parent volunteers. It will start at about 11:15 and will end at 2:30.
We will be needing help with set up, booths and clean up. In order to make this field day possible we need your participation.  If you are willing to help volunteer please contact Darren Briemle at dbrieml@srvusd.net.

    Thanks,
        Leadership students

MONTE VISTA FRESHMAN BASEBALL TOURNEY- This week
Are you hoping to play baseball in high school?  April 11-18 MV is hosting a tournament with games daily at 4:30 and this Saturday starting at 9am.  The championship game starts at 4:30 with general admission seating $5 and bbq and snacks available.  So walk across to the varsity field, grab a seat and a hot dog dinner and enjoy a game.  It is a great chance for younger players to see freshman level teams and to cheer on the Los Cerros alums (Jeff Lockie, Nick Shirreffs, Dan Glover, CJ Maruyama, Jon Oldfather).  Details are on the MV website:
montevistabaseball.com

YOSEMITE NEWS
Attention all students going to Yosemite- May 10 will be here before we know it.  Be sure you are getting lots of exercise and preparing to hike five miles every day.  If you have new shoes, break them in at home, wearing them enough to prevent blisters.  If you can't find your packing list, you can find it on the web at this link.  http://
yni.org/yi/miscfiles/FSEquip11.1.07.pdf
.  There is lots of other information on the YNI.org website.  Take a look.  Happy hiking!!  Mrs. Shetterly and Mrs. Charley

ATTENDANCE REMINDER  552-5626
If your child is going to be absent please call the attendance line. All absences have to be verified by a parent. Emailing the child’s teachers does not clear the absence.  The attendance line can be called 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 552-5626.

PTA MEETING
Please join us for this month's PTA meeting next Thursday, April 23rd at 9:00 am in the teacher's lunchroom.  Our guest speaker will be Becky Smith, the principal at Monte Vista.  She will talk about what's new and exciting at the high school and be available for questions. It's a great opportunity  for 8th grade parents to get information in a smaller setting. This is always a popular and informative meeting, and we look forward to seeing many of you there.

STAR TESTING

STAR Testing at Los Cerros will be May 5th, 6th, and 7th.  Parents, please plan in advance to ensure students will be in attendance on these dates.  All STAR Testing will take place in the morning and students will attend school all day.  If you have any questions about STAR Testing, please contact Mike Cannon at

DESTEENATION
Designed for students entering grades 6-9, DesTEENation offers eight separate weeks of camps with one great theme, “Capture It”. This summer we will document our excitement with video and pictures, and then we teach our participants to make their own commercial to highlight their time at camp for parents. Some of the many trips we have this summer include: Great America, Discovery Kingdom, Water World, Paintball, Indoor Skydiving, and many many more. For the full schedule and to register please visit The Town’s website under Teen Recreation.

INDEPENDENT STUDY PE

Sports at Los Cerros
LOS CERROS CO-ED GOLF TEAM
There will be an information meeting for students on April 21, right after school in Rm 7, (Mrs. Hintz).  We encourage anyone interested in being on the team to attend the meeting for dates of try out, matches, and other information.

This is a competitive team and previous golf experience is necessary.  This after school sport is different from other after school sports because we are limited as to how many students we can have, and we use public courses whose requirements must be followed.  The golf team will be selected based on try out performance, golf experience, and grade level, (we try to give preference to 8th graders as this will be their last opportunity to play on the LC team).  Students chosen for the team will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the course and for their green fees.

We look forward to another great golf season!  Coach Anderson and Coach Hintz

MONTE VISTA SPORTS FAIRE OPEN HOUSE
All incoming 9th grade students interested in participating in sports at Monte Vista.  Come meet coaches, pick-up paperwork and receive information.  Monday, April 20th 7-9 in the MV large gym.  Get into the Mustang Spirit.  MV logo clothing and the MV VIP card will be on sale.

TONIGHT!!   MySpace is So Yesterday!
4/16  7pm-8pm at Los Cerros

Most students know if they still have a MySpace account, it's so yesterday!  Facebook has grown 40% year-over-year causing many concerns for parents.  It's not only Facebook but a whole new way of mixing and mashing social networking sites over the last few years that have added to the cyber safety woes we face.  Come join us as we discuss the latest in being an informed parent and keeping your kids safe. Come and hear Linda Uhrenholt from AT&T Regional Director of Education share what you need to know now, and answer your questions.  RSVP   nschubb@srvusd.net

Turn off TV/Computer Week
4/20-2/24 Study after study continues to show that parents are the number one factor in a child’s life.  This makes role modeling vitally important and puts greater pressure on parents to “do” as they say, not merely act as they might like.

This is true in all aspects of life, overweight and obese children are often the children of overweight and obese parents, children who read have parents who read and the list goes on.  How often have we faced ourselves in the mirror and discovered we have become our parents!  This has happened because we “do as they do, not as they say.”  For that very reason, parents have a responsibility to as active in their children’s lives as possible.

Screen time reduction is a prime example of how parents can set a good example.  By reducing your time in front of the television, computer or electronic game; by spending less time with your PDA or being plugged in to an iPod, you become available to your children and family.  By encouraging and participating in family activities, meal times and other events, you show that the family unit is important to you, making it more important to them.

Numbers of researchers have proven that family meal times are a key ingredient to improving grades, limiting experimentation of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes and all but eliminating risky and early sexual behaviors.  For those who do not have meals together, we hope you will take this time to select one night per week, ideally the same night each week, and set that as family meal time.  It does not change. If everyone in the family knows that this night is reserved, it adds value to the night and increases the respect for the family.  The meal should be followed by family activity, board games are good, a family walk around the block, or open discussion on a topic of interest to all are all ways to keep the evening family-centric.

There are no screens on family nights, not even to check email and no cell phones or texting.  It is time for the family to be engaged with one another and not be sidetracked by gadgets.
